Bite blocks for making open mouth ear plugs and impressions are used to help a client open his mouth and hold it open during the process of making ear plugs or impressions. The reason this is done is that some people have ear canals that open up when they open their mouth, and if the ear plugs or impressions are made with the mouth closed, then when the client opens his mouth, the ear plugs will no longer be large enough to fill the canal, allowing ambient sound to enter past the ear plug.
We recommend that you use a bite block when the user will be a singer or someone who must routinely shout to others in a noisy workplace. Note, that ear plugs made with a bite block will fit more tightly than they will if made with the mouth closed and tighter ear plugs are not as comfortable to wear for extended periods.
