Choosing Water Plugs: Soft Moldable Silicone vs Pre-Molded Rubber

Soft Silicone Earplugs (ex: Hearos, Mack's and Putty Buddies) are the least expensive water plugs you can buy, and they let in the most sound.  These plugs are probably the best choice for the pool or beach, especially for your kids. Important Soft Silicone qualities:

  • PRO Stable: will not melt at beach, in a hot car in the summer, or in the sauna.
  • PRO Fit gently over the entire ear canal: absolute best for infants and toddlers.
  • PRO Especially recommended for children under 12 years of age.
  • CON Less likely to stay in place during vigorous activity.
  • Tip: An Ear Band-It Headband can help keep soft silicone plugs in place!
Rubber Plugs Earplugs (ex: AquaHearos, AOSafety Swim, Ear Seals and AquaBlock) are made of man-made materials including both rubber and molded silicone. This type of plugs retain their shape, conforming just a little to the ear canal, so sizing is important. Important Rubber Plug qualities:
  • PRO Durability: long lasting and very easy to clean.
  • PRO Fit: often stay in better than silicone plugs.
  • CON Personal preference is important: trying different kinds may be necessary.
  • CON Available in limited sizes, and may not fit everyone.
